UBIQ Network, with its patented decentralized architecture, provides an alternative to conventional cloud computing, providing increased reliability and data mobility at a lower cost.

The emergence of cloud computing, or the on-demand availability of computer system resources such as storage and computing power, has provided so much convenience for individuals and organizations worldwide. It has allowed people to access their data from anywhere, as long as they can connect to the internet. Cloud computing has also enabled businesses to have distributed workforces, often involving hybrid and remote work. This has allowed them to access a wider talent pool, as well as continue operations even during disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

While cloud computing has many benefits, there are also drawbacks, the most prominent of which is reliability. Cloud computing is a centralized technology that relies on data centers, which are often large facilities housing numerous servers. This introduces a single point of failure, where, if a data center is compromised, the entire service often goes down, interrupting operations and negatively affecting clients. This has happened with commercial cloud hosting services several times, such as on February 28, 2017, when Amazon Web Services suffered an outage for several hours, resulting in businesses that rely on AWS, becoming inaccessible.

It was this incident that inspired Mr. Steven He to think of a solution that ensures greater reliability while providing the same convenience as cloud computing. He, who has more than 30 years’ experience in the field of IT, including enterprise software and game development, founded Ubiq, Inc. that same year. The company’s mission is to develop the next generation of network computing. His research and efforts have resulted in several patent applications and grants from the US Patent and Trademark Office, with more patent applications filed in other countries.

Ubiq’s flagship product is UBIQ Network, it’s a next generation cloud computing platform that seeks to solve the reliability issues encountered by traditional cloud hosting services by fostering decentralization. According to He, today’s cloud computing is a deviation from the original goal of the internet, which was based on the US Department of Defense’s ARPANET. During the Cold War, the US wanted to decentralize its information network, preventing its capabilities from being crippled by a singular strike on headquarters.

However, He believes that cloud computing is a move in the reverse direction, reintroducing a single point of failure. Through UBIQ Network, he aims to provide an alternative to traditional cloud computing services, providing exceptional service in terms of reliability and data mobility. Ubiq has been granted patents in both these areas, signifying a major improvement over existing technologies. The company’s motto is SAFER, which stands for Serve All Fairly, Effectively, and Reliably.

With regard to reliability, He explains that it is measured in terms of uptime “nines”, where 99% uptime is “two nines” while 99.9% and 99.99% are correspondingly “three nines” and “four nines”. While four nines seems to be a very high level of uptime, it still corresponds to around 52 minutes of downtime each year. For crucial sectors such as financial services, utilities, and defense, a reliability of five nines is needed, which translates to an average of less than six minutes downtime per year.

According to He, with UBIQ Network’s patented decentralized architecture, it is able to provide a level of reliability commensurate to the client’s needs, even up to five nines and more. With conventional cloud computing, increasing reliability from four nines to five nines entails an exponential increase in cost. However, for UBIQ Network, it is just a linear increase, resulting in more savings for clients. The network now has more than 40 nodes worldwide, primarily in the US, China, Canada, Germany and Hong Kong, with multiple software applications now running on the platform.

Meanwhile, UBIQ Network also provides data mobility to clients. According to He, with conventional cloud computing, a user’s data resides in a data center in a particular locality. If a user is located near the data center, communication is smooth, but this degrades the further they get from the data center. With UBIQ Network, the data moves alongside the user and is stored in a node geographically closest to them. For example, a user on the US East Coast will likely have their data in a networking node located in New York. If they move to Germany, the data can be moved to nodes in Frankfurt or Berlin, ensuring smoother operation.

“Our vision has been continually evaluated and is now coming to reality,” He says. “In the age of centralized cloud computing, UBIQ Network provides an alternative that ensures better reliability and data mobility. It will not replace cloud computing, as cloud computing will not replace supercomputing. However, UBIQ Network overcomes several pain points and inherent weaknesses of cloud computing, providing end users with reliable, safe, high-performance, and cost-effective online services wherever they are.”

Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO), which recently acquired VMware, today announced developments across its Software-Defined Edge product portfolio to enable enterprises to support Edge AI workloads via new and enhanced connectivity, deployment, and lifecycle management capabilities, including:

  • Combined Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and satellite connections support in the VMware VeloCloud Edge 710 appliance as well as the new VMware VeloCloud Edge 720 and 740 appliances.
  • VMware VeloCloud SASE, secured by Symantec enhancements featuring the integration of VeloCloud and Symantec points of presence (PoPs).
  • VMware Edge Compute Stack product enhancements.

According to IDC, worldwide spending on edge computing is expected to be $232 billion in 2024, an increase of 15.4% over 2023. Edge computing is expected to play a pivotal role in the deployment of AI applications. (1) Broadcom is evolving its software-defined edge portfolio to help enterprises address the growth of AI and non-AI workloads at the edge. Edge AI workloads are deployed at geographically dispersed locations to enhance business operations in order to reduce costs, increase sales or improve compliance. Unlike traditional IT workloads which are centralized at the data center, Edge AI workloads such as video inference cameras, industrial control systems, and other OT (Operational Technology) devices and applications are deployed locally and are largely autonomous, they are orchestrated rather than administered, they consume data where it’s being created, and are driven by the lines of business.

Broadcom defines the software-defined edge as distributed digital infrastructure for connecting, securing and running workloads across a number of locations, close to endpoints that are producing or consuming data. It extends to where the users and devices are – in the office, on the road, in a cell site, at a retail store or on the factory floor. Broadcom addresses the three layers of the software-defined edge: the edge compute stack which hosts the applications and workloads; the intelligent overlay where connectivity and security services run across the WAN; and the underlay network layer, which runs the software for network connectivity across fixed and 5G networks to provide orchestration and network programmability.

“We’re focused on enabling enterprises to adopt Edge AI workloads,” said Sanjay Uppal, vice president and general manager, Software-Defined Edge Division, Broadcom. “We’ve announced support for Fixed Wireless Access and satellite connections in VMware VeloCloud Edge to deliver critical, blended connectivity for OT devices as well as AI and non-AI edge workloads. We uniquely offer enterprises a good, better, best approach to connectivity at the edge by allowing them to tweak real-time WAN performance, gain insights from the network, and program the network. This convergence of the underlay network enables enterprises to build networks in minutes to support today’s and tomorrow’s workloads.”

Integrated FWA and Satellite Support to Enhance Connectivity for Edge AI Workloads
To address the need for more robust connectivity to support edge computing and Edge AI workloads, Broadcom today announced enhancements to the VMware VeloCloud Edge 710 appliance as well as introduced new VMware VeloCloud Edge 720 and 740 appliances. VeloCloud Edge 710 now provides enterprises with a combination of broadband, FWA, and satellite connections to significantly improve real-time voice, video, and application traffic – delivering enhanced connectivity at the edge. This blended connectivity provides enterprises with redundant, always-on connectivity for edge devices and workloads. Additionally, Communication Service Providers (CSPs) can use the VeloCloud Edge 710, 720, and 740 appliances to further modernize their infrastructure and monetize their services by delivering a premium, combined SD-WAN, FWA, and satellite offering to enterprise customers in support of their edge deployments. CSPs running both VeloCloud SD-WAN and VMware Telco Cloud Platform benefit from the ability to program the real-time performance of their WAN using insights from their networks. Read more in the blog post, “Unveiling the Future of Networking: VMware VeloCloud SD-WAN Edges 710-5G, 720, and 740.”

PoP Integration Boosts Enterprise Connectivity to the Cloud
To better assist enterprises with cloud connectivity, Broadcom today announced initial integration of VeloCloud SD-WAN points of presence (PoPs) with Symantec PoPs. This integration will further automate cloud access without compromising performance and security. VeloCloud SASE, secured by Symantec customers will also benefit from higher bandwidth and availability, lower latency, and global reach to major cloud and SaaS providers. Earlier this year, Broadcom announced the availability of VeloCloud SASE, secured by Symantec—a single-vendor SASE solution. The solution is a culmination of a joint effort to integrate best-in-class VeloCloud SD-WAN and Symantec Security Service Edge (SSE) capabilities—extending significant benefits to Broadcom’s VeloCloud and Symantec customers.

Simplifying Edge AI Workload Deployment and Lifecycle Management
The distributed nature of the edge produces numerous challenges for enterprises and their respective IT teams—from managing edge devices, applications, and infrastructure across multiple if not hundreds or thousands of locations. Enterprises are investing in solutions that enable zero-touch provisioning and application lifecycle management to accelerate the turnkey deployment of secure edge environments. An edge-optimized runtime and orchestration platform, VMware Edge Compute Stack delivers frictionless management of edge apps and infrastructure across many sites with limited resources. With its latest two releases, VMware Edge Compute Stack delivered critical capabilities to efficiently manage infrastructure and applications including Edge AI apps and workloads such as Small Language Models (SLMs) at dispersed sites, including:

  • Zero-Touch Orchestration: VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator simplifies deployment and application lifecycle management across multiple sites by leveraging GitOps and desired state management. By automating these processes, enterprises enable consistent and efficient operations, even with limited IT resources.
  • Pull-Based Architecture: Hosts always initiate the communication to the management plane as a keepalive, and also to fetch any changes to its configuration. This architecture puts less burden on the management plane, allowing it to achieve a much higher scale.
  • Edge Infrastructure and Application Monitoring: It configures metrics gathering and transmission for infrastructure, virtual machines, and Kubernetes-based workloads. Customers can achieve comprehensive local edge monitoring in minutes with the included sample implementation of industry-standard monitoring tools and pre-built dashboards.

These capabilities simplify deploying and managing Edge AI workloads enabling enterprises to more quickly realize the business benefits of their Edge AI investments. The recent release of VMware Edge Compute Stack 3.6 delivered additional new features to make it even easier to deploy and manage the edge at scale.

Computer Vision AI and Precision Genomic Collaboration Aims to Increase Early Detection Rates, Improving Survival Chances for Millions

Imidex, a leading medical device company specializing in utilizing AI for lung nodule and mass detection, and Orbit Genomics, a pioneer in DNA sequencing for precision cancer diagnosis, today announced a strategic relationship aimed at helping to reduce the number of lives lost to lung cancer. Lung cancer is currently the leading cause of cancer-related deaths around the world.

“Imidex’s technology is one of the only FDA 510(k) cleared devices capable of screening broad populations and incidentally detecting lung nodules and masses from chest x-rays. This positions us as the front-end solution to identify high-risk populations for further evaluation at the lowest cost,” said Wes Bolsen, CEO of Imidex. “By leveraging chest x-ray, we have the ability to opportunistically identify millions more patients with pulmonary nodules that are unwilling or not qualified to get a low dose radiation CT scan.”

Low-dose computed tomography (CT) is currently the standard method for lung cancer screening in high-risk patients in the United States. However, less than 6% of high-risk patients in the U.S. undergo this screening, with some states reporting rates as low as 1%. Chest x-ray (CXR) offers a broader reach for the screening and incidental detection of lung nodules, which are often early indicators of lung cancer. Imidex’s FDA 510(k) cleared VisiRad XR device has demonstrated an 83% sensitivity in detecting lung nodules as small as 6mm in CXRs, positioning it as an important tool for the identification of critical pulmonary findings that are often missed.

Dede Willis, President & CEO of Orbit Genomics, commented, “This is a natural formation of a strategic relationship between two companies focused on the same goal: saving lives lost to cancer. We are preparing to start clinical trials for our first product, OrbiSeq-L, for diagnosing lung cancer in patients with indeterminate pulmonary nodules found through low-dose CT. Imidex’s technology is the top of the lung cancer identification funnel, utilizing chest x-rays rather than CT scans to detect potential cancer patients who might otherwise go undiagnosed. Orbit Genomics can then immediately test those identified lung nodule patients with OrbiSeq-L, providing highly specific insights from a simple blood sample into their condition and directing them to the most effective forms of care.”

The OrbiSeq technology platform extends beyond cancer detection, with applications in a wide range of diseases and conditions, including heart disease and neurological disorders. OrbiSeq uses AI to analyze repetitive DNA which mutates rapidly and reflects overall genome stability, serves as ideal regions of interest for studying age-related diseases and conditions. OrbiSeq also evaluated regions for ethnicity and gender bias, ensuring that products are effective for everyone. Orbit Genomics has demonstrated the ability to detect diseases early and predict drug efficacy in individuals, making the technology a valuable tool for personalized medicine.

This collaboration between Imidex and Orbit Genomics represents a significant step forward in the fight against lung cancer and other complex diseases, with the potential to save countless lives through early detection and intervention.
