Joscha, would you mind sharing with us some insights into your professional journey and how you arrived at your current role as Head of Product at Connectly.ai?

My path to the tech industry and product management took a bit of an unconventional route. My introduction to product development started in the hair care sector, where I had the opportunity to dive deep into human needs and master the art of user-centric design. When I found myself looking for a more dynamic environment, I embarked on a nearly decade-long journey at Google.

I began in sales and gained invaluable insights into customer pain points and the intricacies of building relationships. This then laid the groundwork for my transition into a product role within the Ads organization at Google.

After my time at Google, I took a leap into the unknown and joined Connectly as the fourth employee—a decision fueled by the thrill of building something from the ground up.. Today, we have a global team of more than 50, we partner with category-defining customers, and we are pushing the boundaries of AI research and product development. I couldn’t be more excited about where we’re headed next.

How does RAG revolutionize customer interaction and business intelligence in sales, with a special emphasis on the critical aspects of accuracy and timeliness of information?

By combining a generative model with a retrieval system, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) enhances AI responses with accurate, current data. 

Large Language Models (LLMs) in a production environment are constrained by their static datasets, and often lack in accuracy and timeliness. However, RAG introduces a dynamic component that leverages real-time external databases. This ensures that every piece of information it provides or action it recommends is grounded in the latest available data.

As the Head of Product at Connectly.ai, how do you foresee integrating RAG technology into your product offerings to enhance customer experiences and sales effectiveness?

RAG is one part of a cohesive AI strategy. At Connectly we also found that we had to start training our own embeddings as well as models to help make our AI Sales Assistant efficient, fast and reliable.

Traditional AI models often encounter challenges with stale data sets and complex queries. How does RAG address these limitations, and what advantages does it bring to AI systems in terms of improving responsiveness and relevance of information?

Complex queries that would stump earlier AI models are now within reach with enhanced query resolution. By employing sophisticated retrieval systems to gather data from numerous sources, RAG can dissect and respond to multifaceted questions in a nuanced way that was previously unachieveable. 

Additionally, RAG has the capability to pull in and analyze data from diverse sources in real-time, which transforms it into a powerful tool for market analysis. This can then equip businesses and leaders with the agility to adapt to market shifts with insights derived from the most current data, offering a hard-to-match competitive edge.

Could you kindly elaborate on how Connectly.ai is leveraging RAG to enhance its AI sales assistants and provide more personalized and contextually relevant interactions for users?

Of course! RAG is one part of the AI sales assistant that we have built. Businesses share their product catalog with Connectly to inform our sales assistant. This product catalog can have many million products with different variants. The inventory and prices might change on a daily basis. In order to provide the end customer with real time and reliable data, we leverage RAG as part of our architecture.

In your esteemed experience, what key considerations or best practices should companies keep in mind when seeking to enhance their AI models with technologies like RAG to create better customer experiences?

I would recommend starting with a narrow use case first and learn from there. In our case we had to learn the hard way that, for example, offering a multi language product from the start came with many hurdles. Clothes sizing for example can be different from country to country. English makes up more than 40% of common crawl data, so language embeddings and foundational models will work better in English first.  

What personal strategies or approaches do you employ to stay informed about emerging technologies and industry trends, particularly in the realm of AI and customer interaction?

There is so much happening and the AI industry is moving at a crazy pace. I have gathered a list of people I follow on X to stay up to date with some of the latest trends and discussions. I’m also lucky to be living in San Francisco where you will overhear a conversation about AI just about anywhere you go. 

Drawing from your expertise, what valuable advice would you extend to our readers who are interested in implementing RAG or similar technologies to improve their own AI systems and customer interactions?

If you are incorporating AI into your business, I would always start with a design partner in mind who can provide you valuable feedback and insights and is willing to build with you. This can be an external stakeholder like a customer or an internal team. The external validation is extremely helpful and important to help solve actual problems and pain points. 

As we come to the end of our discussion, would you be open to sharing any final thoughts or insights regarding the future of RAG technology and its implications for sales and customer engagement?

There is a lot of interesting discussion around the future of memory in AI. If a sales assistant can remember and learn from all previous conversations it had with a customer, it will evolve into a true personal shopper. 

Finally, Joscha, could you provide us with some insight into what’s next for Connectly.ai and how RAG fits into your broader product roadmap for enhancing customer experiences?

We have a lot of exciting launches in the pipeline. We launched our sales assistant, Sofia AI, about 6 months ago and are already partnering with major global brands. One of the new features I am most excited about is our continued work on AI insights from the conversations customers are having with our sales assistant. These insights can be imported directly into a CRM and help our businesses truly understand their customers. Previously this would have only been possible by interviewing every member in the Sales staff.

I come from a family of entrepreneurs, finding ways to help support the family business from an early age. My first job was cleaning cars at my parent’s car rental company in Buffalo, NY. We worked hard and constantly discussed business, outcomes, and the variables that could be controlled to help drive the company KPIs in the right direction. It was a central part of my life. As I progressed through my academic journey, my focus was on financial and accounting management. However, my practical experiences led me away from the traditional paths of corporate and public accounting and towards a career in sales within the financial services sector. Over the years, I gained extensive exposure to businesses of all sizes, from small enterprises to corporate giants like General Electric. This diverse background equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of financial operations, laying the groundwork for my transition into business intelligence and analytics. Embracing emerging technologies, I navigated through various roles spanning sales, customer success, and solution engineering across multiple organizations. Despite experiencing success in different environments, I continually sought challenges that would leverage my financial expertise and keep me at the forefront of technological innovation. My journey eventually led me to ThoughtSpot, where I spearheaded market expansion efforts and rose through the ranks to manage multiple regions. However, it was my alignment with BlueCloud’s vision and values that ultimately drew me to my current role. This dynamic closely mirrors the fundamentals of a standard sales process. Just as in sales, it’s crucial to identify and understand the pain points driving the need for change. While it may seem tempting to stick with legacy technology, the risks associated with maintaining outdated systems can be just as significant, if not more so, than keeping pace with the evolving technological landscape. At its core, navigating this landscape requires effective change management and risk mitigation strategies. Moreover, it involves bridging the gap between technical solutions and non-technical stakeholders within organizations. For IT companies and consulting firms like ours, this often entails dedicating time and resources to ensure that stakeholders comprehend how technology integration aligns with and supports their overarching business objectives. Ultimately, the conversation must revolve around the delivery of tangible business outcomes and value rather than merely implementing cutting-edge technology for its own sake. AI implementation, much like past shifts such as the introduction of the assembly line, often automates tasks once done by highly specialized workers. Today, as AI takes over more tasks, these workers must adapt by continually learning new, specialized skills to stay relevant. This shift naturally boosts process efficiency, as tools like workflow automation and generative AI streamline tasks such as content creation. While increased efficiency may initially lead to job cuts, it also creates opportunities for workers to move into roles that use their expertise in new ways, adding more value to the organization. The key is to embrace transformation and actively help employees evolve their skills to meet the evolving digital landscape’s demands. Overall, this transformation benefits the global economy by encouraging growth, efficiency, and specialization.

Firstly, it’s crucial to understand that the macroeconomic climate has impacted product companies, particularly those operating on a Software as a Service (SaaS) model. Valuation processes have evolved, and what may seem like a promising technology from the outside may not necessarily ensure sustainability for the company offering it. Therefore, IT professionals need to exercise caution and consider the broader landscape before investing time and resources into learning or implementing a particular technology. In navigating this landscape, I recommend relying on trusted partners who conduct thorough evaluations behind the scenes. These partners can provide insights into the viability and long-term prospects of various technologies, helping IT professionals make informed decisions. Below please find the perspectives and experiences of Chris Lynch, as he imparts wisdom that can shape the trajectory of all businesses. 

Chris, please tell us a bit about yourself and your extensive experience in the tech industry. How has each of your experiences prepared you for your next role?

We are moving into the fourth economic downcycle of my career following the downturns of 1990,2000,2008 and 2022. The macroeconomic causes might be different but the outcomes are likely to be the same. It will be a time of reckoning for over-funded, over-hyped, over-valued technology companies.  In particular, data, AI, and cybersecurity companies will face continued pressure to cut costs and streamline operations as this herd of tech unicorns struggles to demonstrate viable paths to generating returns for investors and employees.

My predictions for 2023 are simple:

As the economic softness persists, there will be a contraction in enterprise spending on technology as management teams figure out the duration of this downturn.  But smart spending on data and analytics solutions will persist as leading teams figure out how to outpace their competitors.

In the second half of 2023, I expect some consolidation within the realms of data, analytics, AI, and cybersecurity.   The largest technology companies will put their cash to work and take advantage of lower valuations.

It is my hope that venture-backed technology companies’ management and boards will re-think equity compensation for their employees in order to keep them motivated and incentivized. My simple advice for investors and leaders is not to panic and stop investments. Instead,  be selective and invest in great ideas, great teams, and great people.

What potential do you think AI and ML hold to transform SMEs and large enterprises? How can companies leverage these modern technologies and streamline their processes?

AI and ML are going to have a profound impact on how we live, conduct our day-to-day business, and shape the global economy. It is imperative for every organization to leverage AI to streamline their operations and processes, improve their costs, and more importantly build and sustain competitive differentiation in the market. But without proper data, AI becomes inefficient and uneventful. The power of those AI models and their predictions rests in the organizational data and needs a universal semantic layer to create AI-ready data.

Why is it important for tech companies to hire the right people to lead their organizations? What qualities should they look for in their leadership roles?

Tech companies, their technology, and their solutions are only as good as the people that build them. World-class products are created by the contributions of world-class people – at all levels of an organization. To drive excellence, find people who are willing to push the boundaries of what’s possible, whether that’s sales, product, engineering, or beyond. 

These individuals must be team players who recognize the power of one mission, and that can bring that same mentality to their teams and peers. Also, great people, know great people. This understanding is key to building skillful and impactful teams in a day and age where technology is rapidly changing.  

Please tell us about the upcoming Semantic Layer Summit hosted by AtSacle. What does it focus on and what is its significance?

AtScale’s highly anticipated second annual Semantic Layer Summit, held in April 2023, drew a crowd of over 10,000 attendees. The summit featured a dynamic panel discussion with founders representing prominent semantic layer technology providers and related technologies. Participating companies included dbt Labs, Stardog, Starburst, and Cube.

During the summit, the panel covered a range of compelling topics that are currently shaping the semantic layer landscape. These included discussions on emerging concepts like Data Mesh, which revolutionizes data management and governance, Finops, which optimizes financial aspects of data operations, Data Literacy, which fosters a deeper understanding of data within organizations, and Trusted AI, which addresses the critical aspect of trustworthiness in AI applications.

The Semantic Layer Summit provided a unique platform for industry leaders and innovators to exchange insights, share best practices, and collectively explore the forefront of semantic layer technologies. The event served as a catalyst for driving advancements and fostering collaboration in these evolving areas.

According to you, what does the future of data analytics look like? What trends will shape the landscape of the industry?

I see a convergence of data, analytics, and AI rapidly approaching. AI is only as good as the data that fuels it. As generative AI gains momentum, there is a growing need to bring these technologies closer to where businesses run their core processes and workloads. Clients will seek to bridge these worlds without having to make sacrifices. 

In this convergence, security, trust, and governance will be equally important in this convergence. Cloud computing will play a pivotal role in making enterprise AI a reality.   will strategically leverage both private and public clouds to meet their specific needs and capitalize on the benefits offered by each. Skills in data management, data science, and governance will also grow as we see all these trends push forward at a rapid pace. 

What measures should be taken by organizations working with client data to keep the integrity of the company intact and the trust and data of their clients safe?    

Data governance and security best practices are paramount in the evolving landscape of data utilization. As data usage continues to rise, organizations need to prioritize the implementation of robust frameworks to safeguard their own data as well as that of their clients. While regulated industries have started to put guardrails in place on how to protect and manage data, it’s time for these practices to be adopted more broadly. 

This is why a semantic layer is so critical. A semantic layer acts as a bridge, enabling organizations to connect to common governance best practices and tools. For example,  data catalogs can greatly enhance the ability to manage and control the use of enterprise data and data assets. 

Who or what has been your biggest inspiration in life? What keeps you inspired to keep giving your best every day at work?

I often get asked why I continue to work as an operating executive at a venture-backed startup.  The bottom line is that I love it. Witnessing technology ideas turn into thriving businesses that solve real-world problems, create jobs, and create wealth is immensely fulfilling to me. I wholeheartedly believe in the American dream and remain committed to helping as many people as possible achieve it through hard work and collaboration.

Chris has held CEO and leadership roles at tech startups where during his career he raised over $150M in capital and returned more than $7B to his investors. He is an avid supporter of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and has helped raise more than $1M to help fund pediatric cancer research.
