Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO), which recently acquired VMware, today announced developments across its Software-Defined Edge product portfolio to enable enterprises to support Edge AI workloads via new and enhanced connectivity, deployment, and lifecycle management capabilities, including:

  • Combined Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and satellite connections support in the VMware VeloCloud Edge 710 appliance as well as the new VMware VeloCloud Edge 720 and 740 appliances.
  • VMware VeloCloud SASE, secured by Symantec enhancements featuring the integration of VeloCloud and Symantec points of presence (PoPs).
  • VMware Edge Compute Stack product enhancements.

According to IDC, worldwide spending on edge computing is expected to be $232 billion in 2024, an increase of 15.4% over 2023. Edge computing is expected to play a pivotal role in the deployment of AI applications. (1) Broadcom is evolving its software-defined edge portfolio to help enterprises address the growth of AI and non-AI workloads at the edge. Edge AI workloads are deployed at geographically dispersed locations to enhance business operations in order to reduce costs, increase sales or improve compliance. Unlike traditional IT workloads which are centralized at the data center, Edge AI workloads such as video inference cameras, industrial control systems, and other OT (Operational Technology) devices and applications are deployed locally and are largely autonomous, they are orchestrated rather than administered, they consume data where it’s being created, and are driven by the lines of business.

Broadcom defines the software-defined edge as distributed digital infrastructure for connecting, securing and running workloads across a number of locations, close to endpoints that are producing or consuming data. It extends to where the users and devices are – in the office, on the road, in a cell site, at a retail store or on the factory floor. Broadcom addresses the three layers of the software-defined edge: the edge compute stack which hosts the applications and workloads; the intelligent overlay where connectivity and security services run across the WAN; and the underlay network layer, which runs the software for network connectivity across fixed and 5G networks to provide orchestration and network programmability.

“We’re focused on enabling enterprises to adopt Edge AI workloads,” said Sanjay Uppal, vice president and general manager, Software-Defined Edge Division, Broadcom. “We’ve announced support for Fixed Wireless Access and satellite connections in VMware VeloCloud Edge to deliver critical, blended connectivity for OT devices as well as AI and non-AI edge workloads. We uniquely offer enterprises a good, better, best approach to connectivity at the edge by allowing them to tweak real-time WAN performance, gain insights from the network, and program the network. This convergence of the underlay network enables enterprises to build networks in minutes to support today’s and tomorrow’s workloads.”

Integrated FWA and Satellite Support to Enhance Connectivity for Edge AI Workloads
To address the need for more robust connectivity to support edge computing and Edge AI workloads, Broadcom today announced enhancements to the VMware VeloCloud Edge 710 appliance as well as introduced new VMware VeloCloud Edge 720 and 740 appliances. VeloCloud Edge 710 now provides enterprises with a combination of broadband, FWA, and satellite connections to significantly improve real-time voice, video, and application traffic – delivering enhanced connectivity at the edge. This blended connectivity provides enterprises with redundant, always-on connectivity for edge devices and workloads. Additionally, Communication Service Providers (CSPs) can use the VeloCloud Edge 710, 720, and 740 appliances to further modernize their infrastructure and monetize their services by delivering a premium, combined SD-WAN, FWA, and satellite offering to enterprise customers in support of their edge deployments. CSPs running both VeloCloud SD-WAN and VMware Telco Cloud Platform benefit from the ability to program the real-time performance of their WAN using insights from their networks. Read more in the blog post, “Unveiling the Future of Networking: VMware VeloCloud SD-WAN Edges 710-5G, 720, and 740.”

PoP Integration Boosts Enterprise Connectivity to the Cloud
To better assist enterprises with cloud connectivity, Broadcom today announced initial integration of VeloCloud SD-WAN points of presence (PoPs) with Symantec PoPs. This integration will further automate cloud access without compromising performance and security. VeloCloud SASE, secured by Symantec customers will also benefit from higher bandwidth and availability, lower latency, and global reach to major cloud and SaaS providers. Earlier this year, Broadcom announced the availability of VeloCloud SASE, secured by Symantec—a single-vendor SASE solution. The solution is a culmination of a joint effort to integrate best-in-class VeloCloud SD-WAN and Symantec Security Service Edge (SSE) capabilities—extending significant benefits to Broadcom’s VeloCloud and Symantec customers.

Simplifying Edge AI Workload Deployment and Lifecycle Management
The distributed nature of the edge produces numerous challenges for enterprises and their respective IT teams—from managing edge devices, applications, and infrastructure across multiple if not hundreds or thousands of locations. Enterprises are investing in solutions that enable zero-touch provisioning and application lifecycle management to accelerate the turnkey deployment of secure edge environments. An edge-optimized runtime and orchestration platform, VMware Edge Compute Stack delivers frictionless management of edge apps and infrastructure across many sites with limited resources. With its latest two releases, VMware Edge Compute Stack delivered critical capabilities to efficiently manage infrastructure and applications including Edge AI apps and workloads such as Small Language Models (SLMs) at dispersed sites, including:

  • Zero-Touch Orchestration: VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator simplifies deployment and application lifecycle management across multiple sites by leveraging GitOps and desired state management. By automating these processes, enterprises enable consistent and efficient operations, even with limited IT resources.
  • Pull-Based Architecture: Hosts always initiate the communication to the management plane as a keepalive, and also to fetch any changes to its configuration. This architecture puts less burden on the management plane, allowing it to achieve a much higher scale.
  • Edge Infrastructure and Application Monitoring: It configures metrics gathering and transmission for infrastructure, virtual machines, and Kubernetes-based workloads. Customers can achieve comprehensive local edge monitoring in minutes with the included sample implementation of industry-standard monitoring tools and pre-built dashboards.

These capabilities simplify deploying and managing Edge AI workloads enabling enterprises to more quickly realize the business benefits of their Edge AI investments. The recent release of VMware Edge Compute Stack 3.6 delivered additional new features to make it even easier to deploy and manage the edge at scale.

The growing importance of agility and operational efficiency has helped introduce serverless solutions as a revolutionary concept in today’s data processing field. This is not just a revolution, but an evolution that is changing the whole face of infrastructure development and its scale and cost factors on an organizational level. Overall, For companies that are trying to deal with the issues of big data, the serverless model represents an enhanced approach in terms of the modern requirements to the speed, flexibility, and leveraging of the latest trends.

1. Understanding Serverless Architecture

Working with serverless architecture, we can state that servers are not completely excluded in this case; instead, they are managed outside the developers’ and users’ scope. This architecture enables developers to be detached from the infrastructure requirements in order to write code. Cloud suppliers such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud perform the server allocation, sizing, and management.

The serverless model utilizes an operational model where the resources are paid for on consumption, thereby making it efficient in terms of resource usage where resources are dynamically provisioned and dynamically de-provisioned depending on the usage at any given time to ensure that the company pays only what they have consumed. This on-demand nature is particularly useful for data processing tasks, which may have highly varying resource demands.

2. Why serverless for data processing?

2.1 Cost Efficiency Through On-Demand Resources

Old school data processing systems commonly involve the provision of systems and networks before the processing occurs, thus creating a tendency to be underutilized and being resource intensive. Meanwhile, server-less compute architectures provision resources in response to demand, while IaaS can lock the organization in terms of the cost of idle resources. This flexibility is especially useful for organizations that have prevaricating data processing requirements.

In serverless environments, cost is proportional to use; this means that the costs will be less since one will only be charged for what they use, and this will benefit organizations that require a lot of resources some times and very few at other times or newly start-ups. This is a more pleasant concept than servers that are always on, with costs even when there is no processing that has to be done.

2.2 Scalability Without Boundaries

Extreme success in autoscaling is one of the greatest strengths of serverless architectures. When the data processing tasks in question may have unpredictable bursts of data – for example, when you have to process a great number of records at once, or run periodic batch commands, having the serverless architecture like AWS Lambda or Azure Functions will automatically scale to meet the demand that has to be processed. However, even in large fields, this scalability shall not only be characterized by the ability to manage the huge amounts of data generated but also the extent to which this will be possible with very little delay and at the highest possible level of efficiency.

Since the massive compilation can be processed in parallel, they get around the limitations of traditional architectural structures and deliver insights much earlier. This is important, especially for firms that depend on input processing for real-time data processing for decision purposes, such as firms dealing in finance, e-commerce, and IoT.

2.3 Simplified Operations and Maintenance

Outsourcing server management makes it easier for teams to focus on the creation of central functions for the application rather than being overwhelmed with technological issues. As for deployment, updates, and monitoring, serverless architectural approaches provide inherent tools that make these operations easy.

Including a scaling of application, self-healing properties, and runtime environments imply that operational management is kept to a minimum. In data processing, it means more efficacious and predictable utilization as the infrastructure learns in an instant about the requirements of the application.

2.4 Innovation Through Agility

Serverless architectures enable the use of possible multi-tenant services because they introduce possible custom deployment for new compute-oriented data processing workloads. There are no expensive configurations, no infrastructure to purchase, which must also be repaid in the long run, and no time-consuming installation.

Serverless functions are easily designed to work independently with a very loose coupling; thus, it follows the microservices model, whereby the various components of a system, in this case a data pipeline, can be developed and deployed independently. This kind of agility is important specifically for organizations that, in one way or another, have to quickly respond to market shifts or have to incorporate new technologies into their processes.

2.5 Security and Compliance

Security and compliance are not a factor of discussion when it comes to data processing and management. Serverless architectures have microservices and management instruments that include auto-update, patch, and encrypt, as well as the privilege controls. The underlying infrastructure of a multi-tenant cloud is secured by the cloud providers so that organizations can focus on data and application logic.

Moreover, commonly used serverless solutions are compliance-certified solutions, so businesses do not have to search for compliance themselves. This is especially valid when it comes to fields such as finance, medicine, or government, which require high levels of compliance when it comes to data processing.

3. Advanced Use Cases of Serverless Data Processing

3.1 Real-Time Analytics

Integration of real-time analytics requires that the data is analyzed as soon as it is received, making serverless architecture suitable because of its scalability for throughput and low latency. Some of the use cases that could be well served by this kind of application are fraud detection, stock trading algorithms, and real-time recommendation engines.

3.2 ETL Pipelines

Data acquisition, preparation, and loading procedures are collectively referred to as Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) workflows. Serverless architectures enable As such, there is an opportunity to process large data volumes in parallel with ETL jobs to become faster and cheaper. The fact of scaling and resource management, which is provided by serverless platforms, allows achieving accumulation of ETL processes and their working without interruptions and slowdowns with regard to the size of the load.

3.3 Machine Learning Inference

Deploying a model for inference on a serverless platform is much cheaper and quicker than deploying them on a conventional platform. In serverless architectures, resources are also self-sufficient when it comes to the computing needs of complex models, thus enabling easy deployment of machine learning solutions at scale.

4. Overcoming Challenges in Serverless Data Processing

Despite the numerous benefits provided by serverless architectures, there are some issues that need to be discussed. There could be increased cold start latency because when the function is invoked for the first time, it takes more time to bring up resources due to this latency, which can be an issue in latency-sensitive systems. On top, due to the stateless nature of serverless functions, stateful operations can be challenging and hence may have to be handled outside the functions by using resources such as databases.

Nonetheless, these concerns could be addressed through architectural guidelines, for instance, applying warm-up techniques for lessening the cold start time or employing managed stateful services that can easily connect to serverless functions.

5. Looking Ahead: The Future of Serverless Data Processing

In the era where more and more large and small organizations turn to serverless solutions, the approaches to data processing will inevitably change as well. When serverless computing is married with other technologies such as edge computing, artificial intelligence, and blockchain, then it opens up new prospects for data processing.

The change to serverless is not just technical anymore, but rather a significant change in organizational adoption of both platforms and applications. Those pursuing the art of decision-making based on big data will also need to adopt serverless architectures to survive in the long run.

6. Strategic Leverage for Competitive Advantage

Serverless architectures provide the organizations an edge to survive in the ever-increasing digital economy environment. Since serverless models are more cost-effective, easily scalable, and operate in a highly efficient manner, companies need to unlock the ability to process data in near real-time and progress the innovation curve even further. As it stands today, data has become a new form of oil that cannot be converted into the physical world, but rather, a form of oil that, in the modern world, cannot be processed and analyzed without the need for a specialized set of tools. Subsequently, as the world continues to advance digitally, serverless architectures will not bypass the chance to better the existing peculiarities of data processing.

Caregility Corporation, an enterprise telehealth leader dedicated to connecting care for patients and clinicians everywhere, is excited to announce the release of new fall risk detection capability in its iObserver solution. Hospital care teams use iObserver for continuous observation of patients at risk of self-harm or falls. The new artificial intelligence (AI) capability, developed natively by Caregility, uses computer vision to analyze visual information, detect fall risks, and alert caregivers accordingly.

The Caregility platform allows AI technology to run entirely on telehealth edge devices in the patient room, eliminating the need to stream patient audio-visual data to the cloud. This approach ensures cost-effective, scalable solutions across thousands of rooms where Caregility endpoints are available today. Other comparable technologies face challenges related to bandwidth for video streams and the processing power needed to scale across numerous rooms. Most importantly, this purposeful application of computer vision technology underscores Caregility’s commitment to responsible AI, as visual data is processed locally, safeguarding data protection and privacy.

“Our open and adaptable platform allows us to develop native AI capabilities when possible while also evaluating other third-party solutions to determine if they can add value to caregivers’ workflows,” said Kedar Ganta, Caregility’s Chief Product and Engineering Officer. “This flexibility keeps us at the forefront of AI advancements without being locked into a single solution.”

“We’re redefining the future of telehealth with AI-powered edge computing,” said Bin Guan, Caregility’s Chief Innovation Officer. “By breaking down traditional barriers to AI adoption, we’re enabling healthcare providers to leverage cutting-edge technology without sacrificing operational efficiency or data privacy.”

“This breakthrough in AI at the edge is confirmation of Caregility’s ability to innovate,” added Mike Brandofino, Caregility’s President and Chief Operating Officer. “At the same time, no company can provide all the technology required to deliver on the modernization of care. Caregility remains committed to integrating with other AI technology partners where it makes sense in order to bring value and flexibility to our customers. This ultimately provides them with a foundational platform they can build on for the foreseeable future.”

Caregility’s computer vision capability is available to be used on every one of the more than 15,000 Caregility edge devices currently installed in hospitals around the globe. This is a testament to the value and durability of Caregility’s purpose-built devices, called Access Point of Care Systems (APS). The first APS system ever deployed by the company is still running after six and half years in continuous operation, proving that choosing Caregility means that health systems will have a future-proof solution that can adapt as new technology is introduced.

“Our approach to AI involves understanding the challenges our customers face and then identifying where technology can play a role,” said Ganta. “We believe that combining our video AI and audio AI with specialized third-party solutions, such as contactless vitals tracking, can provide caregivers with valuable insights to improve patient outcomes. By leveraging our edge devices and avoiding the challenges of cloud-based AI, we can achieve faster and more accurate results with our proprietary technology.”

Netradyne, an industry-leading SaaS provider of artificial intelligence (AI), edge computing and full-service video telematics focused on safety and driver coaching for commercial fleets, announced its partnership with the Independent Carrier Safety Association (ICSA) as its preferred fleet safety solutions vendor today. Chartered in September 2019, ICSA is a non-profit organization whose goal is to improve highway safety by engaging single-truck operators and small fleets in its safety mission. ICSA provides its members with no-cost safety consulting to ensure these carriers are doing everything they can to reduce risk and crashes.

“Forward-facing cameras are a key component of any truck safety program and a requirement for member carriers to qualify for reduced insurance rates under ICSA’s risk purchase group program,” said Karen Rasmussen, Executive Director at ICSA. “Our Board of Directors determined that carriers already using any of four approved major camera brands are not required to buy cameras from ICSA. Those members who still need to purchase cameras can qualify for a substantial discount from Netradyne.”

Most industry safety experts believe videos from on-road incidents are excellent coaching tools that can help even veteran drivers become better behind the wheel. With its advanced artificial intelligence and high-resolution video, Netradyne’s fleet safety solutions offer an excellent option for ICSA members to coach drivers and retain video evidence in case of a lawsuit.

“We are thrilled to partner with ICSA to bring sophisticated safety tools to small fleets and owner-operators,” said Adam Kahn, president of Netradyne. “The Driver•i device records and analyzes the entire drive. This, combined with premium AI and edge computing, enables it to understand the cause of events, recognize good driving, and offer specific suggestions for improvement.”
