Neda, please share some key milestones and experiences from your professional journey that have shaped your perspective and approach as Chief Product Officer at Stibo Systems.

I have the honor of mentoring a couple of young leaders, and they ask this question a lot. The answer I always give is that I approach each day as an opportunity to learn, so it’s difficult to pinpoint a specific milestone. However, there have been some crucible moments where I made radical decisions, and I think those moments have influenced my journey. One of them was my shift towards computer science. Despite having a background in linguistics and initially aspiring to be a teacher, I took a complete shift and decided to explore computer science. Programming was initially intimidating for me, and I had always tried to avoid math throughout my student life. I saw myself more as an art and literature person, and that gutsy shift turned out to be a great decision in the long term. The decision was made by me, but it wouldn’t have turned into a success without support from my mentors and leaders – it’s super important to have champions around you to guide you, especially early in your career. 

Another significant moment was when I accepted a consulting job that involved phasing out legacy systems. This required negotiating with users who would lose functionalities they had been using for years. These conversations were often challenging, and I was tempted to quit. However, I made the decision to stay and tackle the problem with a more compassionate approach towards the application users. It was during this time that I truly understood the nature of change management in the product development process. People find it difficult to let go of their routines and what has made them successful. The more successful users are with their apps, the less likely they are to embrace change. However, sometimes solutions become outdated and need to be replaced – plain and simple. The challenge is how to build a changing product while ensuring that users come along. This story applies to Stibo Systems. We have been around for over 100 years and have managed to transform our business. Stibo Systems is a perfect example of how to build lasting products, be open to change and transformation and make sure you aren’t leaving any customers behind.

Our heritage extends far back, but we are a cutting-edge technology company. We specialize in delivering data management products that empower companies to make informed decisions, resulting in remarkable outcomes. This approach not only contributes to our sustainable growth but also supports our profitability, allowing us to reinvest and expand.

Better Data

What specific strategies does Stibo Systems employ in acquiring and managing data to ensure it meets the requirements of today and tomorrow?

Stibo Systems helps companies manage their data in a well-governed manner. What does that mean? The very high-level explanation is we help companies acquire data from different sources, manage that data, govern it and prepare it for a specific use. Sometimes, the use case is to build a single source of truth that can be leveraged by other analytics or reporting tools. Other times, we become the input layer for recommendation engines, and sometimes the data is used to build contextualized and relevant product detail pages. 

Data domains we manage include:

  • Product data: Think stock keeping unit (SKUs), think digital shelf where customers interact with product data related to price, inventory, color, size – everything that makes a shopper make a purchase decision.
  • Location data: Consider a restaurant that has multiple locations and needs to manage and enrich their location data. This can be super useful for fast food or grocery stores, as physical location plays an important role in customer experience. During Covid, we even saw stores using their retail space as a warehouse; all is possible if you manage your location data in a scalable manner.
  • Supplier data: Retailers deal with thousands of suppliers. Stibo Systems’ solution enables enterprises to manage supplier data in a central way and even have scorecards for each supplier for a better experience for both retailers and suppliers. An example is that some suppliers are providing excellent product data and assets, and therefore you don’t need to do much working with them, but other suppliers’ data may not be prime time ready. You would need to have more processes and approval workflows – we help retailers manage all that data.
  • Sustainability  Sustainability data is becoming a prominent topic for many companies invested in EST and it is a complex topic, as it entails multiple dimensions. We welcome the complexity because our multidomain data management solution provides the foundation to manage sustainability data which can touch; product data, location data, and supplier data. In addition, out of the box functionalities will empower companies to design and deliver sustainability related reporting concerning their products and services

Better Business

Could you share a couple of customer examples where Stibo Systems’ solutions have significantly contributed to their growth and efficiency? How did multi-domain MDM play a role in this?

Stibo Systems has a robust customer base of about 600, and each customer has had results using our solutions. We help with data operations and internal efficiencies around managing data, but more importantly, we help them scale their business and drive business value. Most of our customers are billion-dollar-plus revenue customers – you can imagine they have many employees who touch data, and there are many handovers in the process, leading to high cost of data ops. Using our products help them reduce waste in the process and also reduce data liability. 

Imagine you are a manufacturing company trying to sell a product or service on a digital shelf, whether that digital shelf sits within your own channel or other channels such as Amazon or other marketplaces. Now, imagine the data you published about your product or service is wrong. Besides the embarrassment of having incorrect data, there can be legal consequences, not to mention lost revenue because customers will buy something they were misinformed or misguided on. So, the impact of not having a data management platform can be utterly negative.

Next, picture you are a retailer tasked with increasing your supplier count by 25%, but you don’t have one single headcount to deal with these suppliers. If you are interacting with your suppliers through spreadsheets and emails instead of a solution like Stibo Systems, that will be almost impossible. The same example applies if you are heavily investing in AI, and your machine learning modules are not giving you sufficient results unless you have trustworthy data. Therefore, you will not get the ROI on your data science teams and machine learning applications – recommendations or decision engines all need accurate data.

Stibo Systems believes fueling businesses with better data empowers them to make better decisions grounded in accurate data. As an example, we are working with one of the largest connected technical device manufacturers. These folks are amazing at what they do, and they understand the impact they can have on the planet by sharing their carbon footprint with their distributors and taking a collective approach towards reducing carbon footprint in the end-to-end supply chain. We help them manage that data and then share with their distributors at scale. 

Another example is companies that want to share product ingredients with their end customers. We help them with that and also show their customers data depending on their demographics. The keto diet might be a big driver for a certain region, whereas a consumer in the same country but a different zip code may be more interested in buying a whole food ingredient with less carbon footprint.

Could you delve into how multi-domain master data management is leveraged to address trending issues, particularly in the realm of sustainability and managing sustainability data?

By 2025, companies operating in the EU will be required to report on their sustainability efforts and progress. This reporting, akin to financial accounting, will encompass aspects like carbon footprint. European companies, as well as multinationals operating in Europe, are actively working to comply with these regulations. However, when we look at regions like Asia or North America, companies that operate within a single region or country might not have the same level of awareness about impending sustainability reporting requirements, primarily because it isn’t yet regulatory there.

Three primary reasons are driving this change. First and foremost is the regulatory aspect. Companies, especially those in the developed world, should proactively prepare to meet these upcoming regulations. Europe is leading the way with its 2025 deadline, and it’s likely that states in the U.S., particularly California, will follow suit. Second, brand reputation is increasingly tied to environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. Reputation can be influenced by various stakeholders, and companies don’t want to find themselves lagging behind. The impact on the reputation of industries like tobacco and oil due to changing consumer expectations is a stark example.

Last, consumer purchase behavior is evolving. Consumers are becoming more purpose-driven in their choices. While price and product attributes were historically key factors, now, consumers are considering whether a product is good for the planet. They are making choices based on trustworthy information regarding packaging, recyclability, carbon footprint and more.

In essence, we specialize in managing various types of business data, and sustainability data is no exception. Stibo Systems doesn’t generate this data; we make it readily available. As the market shifts towards sustainability-conscious consumer choices and regulatory requirements loom, companies across industries, including grocery retail, will need to consider the carbon footprint of their products and supply chains. This data will play a crucial role in decisionmaking, such as selecting locally grown items with a lower carbon footprint over imported alternatives.

Challenges in Sustainability Reporting

Managing and governing the collection and reporting of sustainability data can be complex and error-prone. How does Stibo Systems approach this challenge and what solutions do you offer to mitigate risks?

Quite frankly, no one has all the answers to this right now. An area we feel we can help is data exchange. At the moment, there are no predefined standards about what attributes are needed or the format that they should be restored in. There’s no metadata dictionary. You might start collecting sustainability data attributes, but you have to keep reissuing them. Certain certifications only last for a year or a fixed period of time before they’re obsolete. And it’s not just capturing a company’s immediate data – it’s their suppliers, who in turn must get data from their suppliers, and so on. 

The key takeaway – sustainability data is more than just an attribute and a value. There’s a context and a lifespan around it. Stibo Systems’ role here is to make it manageable. We help create a formalized process – data controls, guardrails that MDM provides around applying data quality rules, sufficiency scores, business rules, workflows, approval processes and more. Flexibility is a big asset, too. Sustainability data management helps keep you updated as ESG standards change and as new ones come along. You must be agile to compete and win.

Future of MDM and Sustainability

How do you envision the role of multi-domain master data management evolving in the context of sustainability over the next few years? 

More so than ever, businesses are moving beyond sustainability pledges and setting carbon footprint benchmarks and targets. The next phase is about being able to prove the milestones you’ve hit, not only to shareholders and internal stakeholders but to current and future customers. As I said before, nobody has every answer yet – but I feel confident in saying that accurate and transparent data is a big first step toward being able to meet and prove the work that’s being done to lower our carbon footprints and grow sustainably.

My journey at Telit Cinterion began in the Latin American region, where I played a pivotal role in driving the company’s growth and expansion. I was entrusted with the responsibility of spearheading Telit’s business in the United States in 2017, focusing specifically on the software division.

One of my proudest achievements during my tenure has been leading a significant restructuring and turnaround effort. This transformative endeavor propelled the division to achieve remarkable double-digit yearly profits and growth.

At the helm of a global team dispersed across the Americas, Europe and Asia, my responsibilities encompass a comprehensive spectrum of functions, including sales, engineering, product development, research and development, operations and support.

Dive into the intricacies of their challenges, and endeavor to craft solutions that precisely address these issues.

An important lesson to remember is to avoid the common pitfall of creating solutions in search of problems. This sounds funny but it is surprisingly common. Instead, start by identifying genuine problems within the market. Let these authentic needs guide your innovation, ensuring that your efforts are purpose-driven and aligned with real-world demands.

By prioritizing your customers’ needs, adopting a problem-first approach and consistently refining your offerings based on feedback, you can forge a path to success that is both impactful and sustainable.

Regarding our key strategies and actions, we’re actively expanding our team in both research and development, as well as in customer-facing roles. This growth is instrumental in enhancing our capabilities and ensuring effective support for our clients.

A pivotal focus is on the introduction of comprehensive end-to-end solutions. These solutions are strategically designed to empower customers to swiftly achieve results using our deviceWISE platform. A notable achievement lies in the automotive sector, where eight out of the world’s top ten car manufacturers have harnessed our technology to enhance their manufacturing productivity. A remarkable testament to this is a customer’s success story, where the implementation of our products led to a staggering improvement of 3,000 minutes of uptime. This translates to a significant return on investment of 90 million dollars annually, showcasing the tangible benefits of our solutions.

In the realm of machine building, our technologies have facilitated a paradigm shift towards service-oriented models. A compelling illustration is seen in the semiconductor industry, where Telit’s technology is seamlessly integrated into every 300mm semiconductor manufacturing process worldwide. Ricardo Buranello has over 17 years of experience in the Technology and IoT Industry. Before joining Telit Cinterion in 2008, Ricardo worked for big technology companies such as Siemens and Totvs. With Telit, Ricardo held the position of head of Business in Latin America, and in 2017, assumed the role of Global VP for Telit Factory Solutions, driving a significant growth for the business unit.

Currently, Ricardo is Senior Vice President and Head of Telit’s Platforms Business Unit and is engaged in the creation and implementation of Telit’s platforms strategy, which enables some of the biggest companies in the world to deploy IIoT with advanced Edge and Cloud software solutions.

Ricardo graduated from São Paulo Catholic University with a degree in Business Administration. He also has an MBA in Business Economics by FGV-SP and business extension program from NYU – Stern.

Can you provide an overview of your background and experience in the tech industry?

My perspective has been primarily shaped by my experience as a business leader and entrepreneur. Prior to founding Pipefy, I served as a consultant to micro and small businesses and led M & A for national and international companies, many of which were in the tech industry. I also founded and led product development for a local e-commerce marketplace.

This is where the idea for Pipefy originated. I saw that many businesses — including my own — were struggling to solve a common problem: finding the right tools to capture efficiency gains and scale the business by standardizing, automating, and orchestrating disparate and fragmented processes. 

What motivated you to start Pipefy, and what is the mission and vision behind the company?

Our vision has always been to help people build better processes, because we know business success depends not just on what gets done, but how it gets done. Good processes deliver good results and create great user experiences.

Prior to developing Pipefy, I worked in companies where problems with processes and standards of execution were major liabilities, impeding growth and preventing teams from achieving their goals. For example, processes that are bogged down by manual work, or which rely too much on spreadsheets and email threads.

In these scenarios, the work takes too much time and effort to complete. Managers don’t have visibility or control over their processes. Data is fragmented and fragile, so that information remains decentralized and stuck in silos. We developed the Pipefy software solution in response to these kinds of problems, which I knew were common challenges for other companies as well.

A lot of businesses I knew were grappling with the problem of operational efficiency, which inhibited their ability to stay competitive and meet their goals. Some companies were aware that there was a goldmine of efficiency gains hiding in their workflows and processes, but the software tools available to them were too rigid to deliver efficiency across the organization, or they were cost prohibitive due to the endless customizations and add-ons needed to keep them relevant.

With Pipefy, I wanted to create a tool that offered all of the features and capabilities needed to achieve operational efficiency, and also flexible enough to accommodate any type of process or workflow, without burning through the company’s IT resources. The Pipefy solution meets both of these requirements because it gives business teams an adaptable no-code tool they can use to solve many inefficiencies themselves, no matter the department or process.

Pipefy is constantly evolving to help teams do even more with even less. Recently, we introduced Pipefy AI, a new feature that combines our process management capabilities with GPT-4 and OpenAI. These enhancements give users new insights into their data and enable them to build more efficient processes, faster than ever before.

How would you describe Pipefy’s core product or service? What problems does it solve for its customers?

Pipefy gives teams a true no-code process automation platform that they can use to build, automate, and optimize any type of process or workflow. Think of the different types of processes that HR, Finance, and IT teams depend on: Pipefy can handle all of them.

That includes the unstructured, ad hoc, and longtail processes that the components of the existing tech stack can’t touch, so teams have to manage them manually, usually with an array of spreadsheets, email threads, and messaging apps. That just isn’t sustainable, nor is it a good use of a company’s most valuable resource: its employees’ time.

Pipefy solves three key problems for our customers. First, Pipefy accelerates digitalization by transforming previously unstructured and inefficient processes and making them more efficient through automation. Second, we help businesses conserve their IT resources by giving business users a secure, IT-sanctioned toolbox they can use to build and automate many processes themselves. Third, Pipefy breaks the endless cycle of endless customization and add-ons because it’s adaptable for any team, in any department. Pipefy integrates with the existing tech stack to create a unified ecosystem.

How do you envision the future growth and expansion of Pipefy? Are there any specific areas or markets you are targeting?

Pipefy continues to grow globally, and we already have customers in 70 countries around the world. Our long-term growth strategy is ambitious, and currently our focus is on the U.S. and Brazil. On a more granular level, Pipefy is highly adaptable and can be used for any type of process, so we have a lot of opportunities to expand not just in new markets, but also horizontally as businesses realize they can use one tool to manage many different types of processes.  We are really proud of the growth Pipefy has achieved, and was named to the Deloitte Technology Fast 500™, a ranking of the 500 fastest-growing companies in North America.

What role does AI technology play in Pipefy’s products or services? How do you leverage AI to enhance your offerings?

AI is the new frontier for digital transformation in general, and no-code in particular.  It holds enormous potential for both process automation and operational efficiency. Where these two intersect, that’s where Pipefy really shines.

Pipefy AI enhances our existing platform by helping teams solve some of their most complex and time-consuming challenges, such as pulling critical insights from their data, or building more efficient processes. By simply telling Pipefy AI what is needed, users can access complex data analysis and create the best version of their process in mere seconds.

We also partner with technologies that are using AI in other ways. For example, our partner ABBYY uses AI to enhance their document processing capabilities. Partnerships like these allow our customers to get even more benefits from AI to drive efficiency and deliver optimization to an extent only dreamed of just a few years or even months ago.

Security and data privacy are crucial in today’s digital landscape. How does Pipefy ensure the protection of customer data?

We know that businesses and IT teams need solutions they can trust, as much as they need processes they can trust. To us, being worthy of that trust means fortifying our software against known and emerging threats. Pipefy adheres to industry standards and best practices, including SOC2, ISO, GDPR, and LGPD.

But we also want teams that use Pipefy to have the control and features they need to uphold internal governance and compliance standards. So we built additional measures into our software, features like multi-level permission management, SSO, and MFA. Pipefy uses 256-bit encryption during transit and conducts regular pen testing and audits.

Process standardization and structure also play critical roles in security and privacy. That’s because standardized, consistent processes provide better visibility and oversight, which make it easier to enforce governance and compliance standards. Pipefy helps businesses stay secure by helping them standardize and structure their processes and workflows.

Since Pipefy is a no-code platform, business users without a tech background can use it to build and automate workflows and processes, rather than resorting to unsanctioned workarounds or shadow IT.

Can you share any success stories or use cases where Pipefy has made a significant impact on a customer’s operations or outcomes?

At Pipefy, we achieve our goal when we see our customers reaping the benefits of process automation and deeper operational efficiency. For example, one of our customers (NEX Energy) was able to double their customer base by using Pipefy to customize, automate, and scale their processes. This reduced the amount of manual work and process friction, giving their teams more time to build relationships and onboard new customers.

In another instance, one of our customers (BASF) saved 2400 employee hours in one year. Another customer (Capgemini) was able to cut their approval processing time down from three weeks to less than 48 hours. That’s what the power of digitizing and automating a process looks like.

Another great example of how Pipefy can make a difference is in our speed of implementation. One of our clients — a global mining company — chose Pipefy because we were able to deploy a mission-critical workflow for them in a matter of weeks, rather than the usual 3 to 6 month timeframe.

The real story is what these companies are able to do with the efficiency gains we help them achieve. The time and effort they used to put into manual, unstructured processes is recaptured and redirected towards value-driving activities like innovation, analysis, and building better relationships with customers or employees. That’s always the point: to give businesses more time and resources for the things that truly matter.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs who are looking to start their own tech companies?

I think it’s critically important to clearly define the vision that’s guiding you. Know the problem you’re setting out to solve. That’s the foundation for everything you’ll accomplish and it’s what will attract caliber employees and investors, when the time is right.

You’ll also be doing yourself a favor by getting as much hands-on experience as you can. Figure out what skills are going to be most valuable for you as an entrepreneur, and spend most of your effort and time on those. But complement those skills by learning other areas as well. Things like finance, product marketing, and operations. Develop your soft skills: you’ll need to know how to work with others, and how to negotiate, in order to bring your vision to life.

That will put you in a much stronger position as a leader, and give you a broader perspective that can help you make better decisions. You don’t have to be an expert in everything, but try to become competent in as many areas as you can.

How do you see the future of business process management and workflow automation evolving in the coming years?

On the immediate horizon, we know that AI will be a game changer for process management and workflow automation. AI actualizes the full potential of no-code technology, by helping everyone in the business make better decisions and work both smarter and faster than before.

AI gives business leaders deeper access to insights about their data, which helps them identify trends, uncover root causes, and more accurately assess process and team performance. Process managers and practitioners will also benefit from AI. In addition to eliminating manual work and speeding up processes, this technology democratizes process management by empowering team members with deeper insights, faster responses, and levels of scalability they haven’t had before.

Is there anything else you would like to share about Pipefy or your vision for the future?

With the availability of generative AI tools, we really are entering a new epoch in the history of technology and society. As with any big change, there will be questions that can only be answered by moving forward and getting in the weeds to understand what’s working, what isn’t, and figuring out what comes next. When it comes to AI, I’m one of the optimists. I see its potential for making work (and life) better for people. It will also make things better for businesses. AI collapses much of the distance between skills and data, enabling everyone to make better decisions every day. That’s in perfect harmony with our guiding vision, which is to focus first on people, then on processes. As Pipefy brings AI capabilities to our customers, that’s exactly what we’re doing: helping people and businesses build better processes through speed, scalability, and data-driven decision-making.
